Bulgaria is the Eastern European cradle of vocal folk music for women's choirs. After the fall of the Iron Curtain, the special sound with very chesty to throaty, usually quite low-pitched notes also met with fascination and enthusiasm in the western world. While the themes of love and homeland may be similar to those of Western folk music, the odd rhythms and meters are not.
