Description
“The Nine Songs – Lord of the Clouds ” Qu Yuan (340 BC)
Verse 1
I bathe in the scent of orchid rain,
It washes the dust, it eases the stain.
Bright as the blossom, my robe I wear—
Not for beauty, but for your care.
Verse 2
Now you come, the clouds divide,
Golden threads from the heavens slide.
You wheel through the sky in endless flight,
Burning like dawn in the fading night.
Verse 3
You dwell where the stars in silence glow,
With the sun you rise, with the moon you flow.
Your breath is the pulse the heavens keep,
Your light is the clock when the world’s asleep.
Verse 4
Dragons draw your chariot high,
The robe you wear is the boundless sky.
At your hand the storms are born,
The winds awake and the clouds are torn.
Verse 5
Once you came in a blaze so bright,
Colors poured through the waiting night.
But swift you rose to the seas of cloud,
Leaving the earth without a sound.
Verse 6
Your gaze sweeps over the seas and land,
No path to follow, no need to stand.
Boundless traveler, spirit free,
The end of the world is home to thee.
Verse 7
But I remain on the earth below,
Only to watch and ache to know.
My heart like the tide, it swells and breaks,
Longing that gathers, then drifts and shakes.
Verse 8
I search the skies for your homeward way,
I sing to you, but you do not stay.
Lord of the Clouds, can you hear my plea?
My heart breaks into the wind for thee.
